Relaxation Massage: Does It Really Help?

You’re starting the New Year off right, with a gym routine that makes you feel energized and ready to tackle the day or one that makes every muscle in your body feel weak and overworked which in turn makes you feel more accomplished than you knew you could be; and that is a major win! But don’t forget about the necessity of self care; give your mind AND your muscles a break with a relaxation massage.

What exactly is a relaxation massage; after all aren’t all massages relaxing?  A relaxation massage is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you, it’s also known as a Swedish massage. And while all massages can be relaxing, the techniques and purpose behind them vary greatly!

Now we know you’re wondering, does relaxation massage really do anything for me besides help me find a moment in my day to unwind?

Yes; in fact that the researchers at Ohio State University found that:

  • Within days, muscles massaged after exercise recovered about 60% of their strength. This result compared to recovery of about 14% of strength in muscles that were simply rested.

  • Muscles massaged after exercise had fewer damaged fibers and almost no sign of white blood cells, compared to rested muscles. The absence of white blood cells indicates the body did not have to work to repair muscle damage after exercise.

  • Massaged muscles weighed about 8% less than rested muscles, indicating a reduction in swelling.

Great; so your muscles will be stronger, with less damage and swelling, which makes getting back to the gym easier. But what about all the other benefits of relaxation massage?

The Mayo Clinic states that massage can be beneficial for headaches, anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia related to stress, soft-tissue strains, sports injuries, and TMJ pain!

Now that you’re ready to relax, keep in mind that we want you to get the most from your massage; so be sure to take advantage of our steam room, sauna or whirlpool prior to your service; the heat helps relax your muscles. Then melt away into a soothing mindset in our Spa Relaxation Lounge, where you’ll be treated to fruit-infused water in a dark, warm and serene environment before entering your massage therapy suite.
